Self-hosting has a floor and almost no slope, while per-host monitoring has no floor and a steep slope. That is the whole story, and it is why the answer flips somewhere in this table rather than being the same for everyone.

PRTG Network Monitor at this size costs $174 a month. PRTG 500 is $174 a month: the smallest PRTG Network Monitor licence that covers this size, rated by the vendor for up to 50 devices. This is the annually-billed rate, which is what the vendor's page displayed; paying monthly costs more. The vendor quoted EUR, converted at the dated rate on the methodology page.
Read this before you price anything
PRTG is not a hosted service: you install it on your own Windows server. Its figure here is the licence alone, so the server and the time to run PRTG itself are left out, which makes PRTG look cheaper than it is.
What Checkmk Community needs to run at 25 servers
The free, open-source edition of Checkmk, with the Nagios core and round-robin metric files that do not grow once created. It installs as one package containing every component it needs. The figures are our estimate: Checkmk does not publish a requirements table we could cite.

These base figures are an estimate. Checkmk Community does not publish a minimum specification we could cite, so the base memory and disk are derived from the services in its own reference Docker Compose file. Treat them as a starting point and watch the first week of metrics.
What you give up, stated plainly
- Uptime is now yours. PRTG Network Monitor has an operations team on call. Self-hosted, a failed upgrade at 18:00 on a Friday is your evening.
- Backups only exist if you test restoring them. The $4.40 line above buys snapshots, not a rehearsed recovery.
- Checkmk Community is a multi-container stack with a database you have to back up yourself. That is why the maintenance line is 1.5 hours a month rather than zero.
- Licensing: Checkmk Community is GPL-2.0. Several features, including the faster monitoring core, are only in the paid editions.
- Feature parity is never exact. Checkmk Community covers the core of what teams use PRTG Network Monitor for; the long tail of integrations and enterprise controls is where the gap shows.
Where to put Checkmk Community
2.6 GB of memory and 11.2 GB of disk is what this needs at 25 servers. The cheapest plan that fits, among the providers whose prices we have read ourselves, is the Starter 4 GB at VPSServer for $22.00 a month.
We are not claiming this is the cheapest server on the internet. It is the cheapest one we can honestly quote. Hetzner Cloud, Vultr and PikaPods publish prices we could not read programmatically, and Hetzner in particular is usually cheaper per gigabyte of memory than anything quoted above. Price them yourself before you commit.
