Google One storage vs self-hosted PhotoPrism: what each actually costs

Google One storage on the Google AI Plus (2 TB) tier against PhotoPrism running on the smallest server that fits it. Every figure below is computed from the sizing model and the dated prices at the foot of this page, and includes the part most comparisons leave out: your own time.

At 10 people, Google One storage is the cheaper option: $11.58 a month against $195 to run PhotoPrism yourself. Self-hosting this at this size buys you control, not savings.

The same comparison at every team size

Self-hosting has a floor and almost no slope, while per-seat software has no floor and a steep slope. That is the whole story, and it is why the answer flips somewhere in this table rather than being the same for everyone.

Google One storage Google AI Plus (2 TB) against PhotoPrism self-hosted, per month, over 36 months. Self-hosted includes server, backups and maintenance time at $75 an hour.

Read this before you price anything

The plan compared here is the largest one Google's public plans page listed on 2026-10-09: 2 TB, shareable with up to five people. Above that, this comparison stops being like for like, because the self-hosted figures size storage to whatever the team actually stores while the Google plan stays capped at 2 TB. Google sells larger plans, but their prices were not published on that page.

What PhotoPrism needs to run at 10 people

Go with MariaDB and on-device classification. Lighter than Immich but its multi-user story is weaker.

ResourceRequiredHow it is derived
Memory2.7 GB 2 GB for the stack at rest, plus 15 MB per active user, plus 25% headroom
Disk620 GB 20 GB base, plus 60 GB per user
vCPU2 The project's own baseline. For this workload memory runs out before the processor does.

What you give up, stated plainly

We are not going to tell you to self-host this

At 10 people, Google One storage wins on cost once your time is priced at $75 an hour. Self-hosting PhotoPrism here only makes sense for reasons that are not on the invoice: data residency, avoiding a vendor, or wanting to run the thing yourself. Those are real reasons. Saving money is not one of them at this size.

Where to put PhotoPrism

2.7 GB of memory and 620 GB of disk is what this needs at 10 people. The cheapest plan that fits, among the providers whose prices we have read ourselves, is the Pro plus a 600 GB volume at Kamatera for $69.00 a month.

We are not claiming this is the cheapest server on the internet. It is the cheapest one we can honestly quote. Hetzner Cloud, Vultr and PikaPods publish prices we could not read programmatically, and Hetzner in particular is usually cheaper per gigabyte of memory than anything quoted above. Price them yourself before you commit.

The Kamatera link above is an affiliate link: if you open a paying account through it, Kamatera pays us a one-time commission of $75 (in most countries). That never changes the computed costs, which server is chosen, or the conclusion of this page. The sizing model and every price source are published in full.
